Following envisaged challenges and changes that will be brought about by the on-going privatisation of the power sector, the federal government has disclosed plans to review the country’s eight years old Electric Power Sector Reform (EPSR) Act to reflect current realities.
This was disclosed by the Minister of State for Power, Hajia Zainab Kuchi, while speaking during an oversight visit of the Senate Committee on Power and Steel, led by its Chairman, Senator Philip Aduda, yesterday, in Abuja.
Soliciting the lawmakers’ support to effect the necessary changes in the Act, which she said has earnestly started; Kuchi noted that the support of the National Assembly towards the scheduled review process was crucial.
She said, “The EPRS Act came into effect in 2005 and this Act sincerely needs to be reviewed; we have a golden opportunity to do that now because in the last Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, we have been given the opportunity to come up with what we think should change in the EPRS Act.”
