The Edo State House of Assembly yesterday gave the Executive Director of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), Benin Zone, Mr. Effiong Umoren, one month ultimatum within which to complete the abandoned I k i r a n – O ke – Aya r a n – Ikakumo electrification project in Akoko Edo. Residents of Akoko Edo Local Government Area of the state had, in a petition to the House of Assembly, raised the alarm over the whereabouts of the N50 million allegedly appropriated for the completion of the project.
The residents claimed that the project was awarded in 1999 without anything to show for the money appropriated.
Appearing before the House yesterday, Umoren, who attributed his failure to furnish the House Committee on Energy and Water Resources with the required documents relating to the project as earlier requested to the recent local council election in the state, said the project was enlisted to him as a fresh contract under the 2012 budget appropriation by the National Assembly and not an ongoing or a yet-to-be completed contract.
On his part, the lawmaker representing Akoko Edo II, Hon. Kabiru Adjoto, claimed that the project is an ongoing one and attained about 85 per cent completion. But the PHCN boss disagreed.
