Determined to ensure a balanced opinion in the ongoing review of the Metering Code, which seeks to evolve a level playing ground among industry operators in the country, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), has held a public consultation for the exercise. Speaking at the stakeholders’ forum in Abuja at the weekend, the commission’s Chairman, Dr. Sam Amadi, said the review was necessitated by the need to ensure that operators play by the rule, ahead of the expected takeover of the industry by private investors. Essentially, he noted that this was in line with the powers conferred on his commission as enshrined in the Electric Power Sector Reform (EPSR) Act, 2005.
According to Amadi, the public consultation followed a comprehensive deliberation by a Metering Code Panel set up by the commission for that purpose, an assignment, he stated, spanned a week to complete. He stressed that the Metering Code has two major components, viz, Grid Metering Code that is governed by the market operator and the Distribution Code, governed by the distribution companies.
