CONTROVERSIES have continued to trail the planned replacement of the old analog meters with prepaid meters among customers of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).
While some customers favoured the introduction of the prepaid meters which they claimed would promote transparency in the PHCN billing system, some argued that the old analog which is expected to be phased-out soonest from the system is a better billing system.
According to a civil servant who identified himself as Damola Shotunde, prepaid billing system provides PHCN customers the opportunity to control and regulate what they consume.
“We are now in a globalised era where we have the world in our bedroom. To me, prepaid meter has made electricity consumers to be more economical in energy usage. Prepaid meter has eliminated wastage. I prefer the prepaid meter for now but we don’t know how efficient it would become after the privatisation process,” he said.
