Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, yesterday said the severance package and other entitlement for workers of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria will now take place before the end of July.
The minister had repeatedly said all entitlements and benefits due to the workers would be paid by June end.
Speaking in Abuja at the 2nd annual national workshop of the Chartered Institute of Brokers, Nebo said the federal government would not lay off workers of PHCN but rather severe them from public service employment to enable them migrate to the private sector.
He said, “We have great correspondence with union leaders and have agreed on all the fundamentals of the labour issues, verification of over 44,000 workers and will soon commence payment of their severance benefits.”
Also, the minister assured investors in the sector of the safety of their investments as well as increased rate of return on investment.”
According to the minister, huge investment is needed in the sector to meet the target of 40, 000mw power generation by 2020.
