Of Nigeria’s 160 million population, only 40 million have access to electricity through the public power supply system, according to the Ministry of Power.
With the remaining 120 million getting their power supply from other sources, the ministry believes that the nation’s power sector is attractive for investors to put their money as there is a huge market to be tapped in the sector that would guarantee adequate return on investment.
Both the Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, and the Minister of State for Power, Hajiya Zainab Ibrahim Kuchi, told State House correspondents yesterday after the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting that the urge to meet the energy needs of Nigerians has given them confidence that the privatisation of the power sector would be a success.
The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Godsday Orubebe, and the Minister of State in the ministry, Mr. Darius Ishaku, who also presented the scorecard of their ministry to the council, briefed journalists at a session moderated by the Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku.
